Career Possibilities

Surrey, British Columbia is the second largest community in the province, after the city of Vancouver. As you might expect, this large population base means that there are plenty of career opportunities available in Surrey in a number of different areas. Let's take a look at some of the most visible places to find work in the area.

Health Care

Health care is one of the most important industries in the entire province, and Surrey is certainly no exception. There are five community hospitals within the city, all of them looking for a variety of experts in the health care fields.

Right now, the nursing shortage in Surrey continues, making these some of the most sought after professionals in the city. With the third highest hourly wage in the country, BC nurses can expect to make a comfortable living in a diverse job market.

While doctors and nurses and other professionals tend to get the lion's share of publicity when it comes to employment in the health care field, other employees can look for a career in Surrey as well. Maintaining well run facilities means positions for engineers in the field of water treatment chemicals, plumbers, electricians, and all sorts of others.

Manufacturing

Although a lot of the manufacturing jobs in the Lower Mainland are concentrated in Burnaby and Vancouver, the city of Surrey has its share of factories. Particularly prominent are plants specializing in high tech products; computer monitors, keyboards, and the like. Assembly workers oversee robotic equipment which places components encased in heat shrink tubing placed into the chassis which are then shipped throughout the world.

Corporate

Being one of the nerve centres of the province, Surrey is also home to several different corporate headquarters. International companies like the range of nationalities present within the Surrey area, and take advantage of this labour pool. It's a good place to start out if you are hoping to one day cross paths with executive recruitment services and get hired for the helm of a Fortune 500 company!

Cultural Liaison

As we mentioned above, Surrey is well known for its multi-cultural look. That means jobs abound for people who can speak a language beyond English, in a number of different fields. Crossing the divide of culture calls for flexible individuals who can do anything from put on an international hockey school to translate for city and government officials.

Because Surrey is so close to Vancouver, many of its residents also find careers with companies based in that city as well. It's the age of Information, remember, and working outside of your home city does not necessarily have to mean a commute. Resources such as Internet project management software and Base Camp allow workers to complete projects from a home office, rather than make the trip through traffic every single day.

And, of course, don't neglect the dozens of different Surrey careers which help the city run every day. Construction workers, lawyers, bureaucrats, and many others can find meaningful employment in this large city!
