Surrey is divided into six distinct communities. Each of these communities has its own unique character, with a commercial core including public and private recreation facilities, surrounded by high and low density residential development.
CLOVERDALE: Originally the home of the first city hall, Cloverdale is now noted for its world famous rodeo and fine selection of antique stores. The film industry finds Cloverdale a unique location for a variety of television and movie film shoots.
SOUTH SURREY: Upscale neighbourhoods graced with ocean views, fine boutiques and the picturesque seaside community of Crescent Beach represent South Surrey. Much of the residential area is developed with above average sized lots, and a large area of the land is zoned agricultural and is protected by the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission.
FLEETWOOD: The Surrey Sports and Leisure Complex, also in Fleetwood, is Surrey's premier recreation facility featuring an Olympic size swimming pool, two ice arenas, aerobics and weight facilities and provides recreational opportunities for all residents.
GUILDFORD: Also in Guildford is the new Multi-Purpose Community Centre which includes 3 gymnasium, indoor track, weight training and aerobics studio, multi-purpose rooms and lounge space for a wide variety of community activities.
NEWTON: Newton is home to Surrey's first 'wave pool' and has one of Surrey's largest industrial areas. Canada's newest state-of-the-art YMCA is located in Newton.
WHALLEY: Whalley was the location of some of Surrey's earliest commercial development and now includes the area identified as 'Surrey City Centre'. Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Federal Income Tax Data Centre, Surrey Place Shopping Centre and Gateway (a $725 million commercial/residential development) and the North Surrey Recreation Centre are major landmarks in Whalley.
